Tackling the Bay of Biscay
novembre 9, 2008Leaving the Bay of Biscay in this wintery weather is often a relief for the Vendée Globe sailors, as the crossing down to the tip of Spain is far from a pleasant Sunday outing, especially when there are strong headwinds.
The Bay of Biscay stretches out between Finistère at the tip of Brittany and Cape Finisterre, at the tip of Galicia in Spain. 300 miles to cross from Les Sables d’Olonne before they begin the long climb down the coast of Portugal. As is often the case in Winter, Biscay is throwing a temper tantrum.
For the first hours of the Vendée Globe race, the competitors will have their work cut out.
The SW’ly wind, moderate at the start will gradually strengthen to 25 or 30 knots during the night, then 30 to 35 knots with gusts reaching 40-45 knots. However, more than the wind itself, it is the sea state that is going to strain the boats and the sailors. A NW’ly swell crossed with a SW’ly wind will create very rough to heavy seas with waves reaching 5 to 6 metres (16 to 18 feet). The wind will gradually veer NW’ly from the west. These winds will stick with the leading boats before gradually veering N’ly. In fact, these are more or less typical conditions for this time of year, which should enable the frontrunners to make their getaway
Everything is in place to separate out the cream from the crop: From the outset, the fleet will be facing treacherous seas, while feeling the need to remain up with the frontrunners to avoid missing the next weather system… Before dicing with the devil in the southern seas, they are going to have to snatch themselves away from the claws of the bogeyman in the Bay of Biscay.

The «Hivernales» are 4 races on saturdays, during the winter! It will snow, it will freeze, but the Wicked Awesome II team will be sailing. As we like to say now on the boat, «yes, we can», yes, Alice, Irmgard, Roselyn, Tomas, Camilo and I, we can, but Jean-Pierre cannot!

Mon analyse de la régate :
Nous avons pris un très bon départ : placés correctement, nous étions le premier bateau sur la ligne, à notre côté un autre Luthi en principe plus puissant que nous. Au moment du départ et dans les moments qui ont suivi, toute l’équipe était concentrée et les réglages des voiles a été suivi avec précision, ce qui nous a permis d’aller suffisamment vite pour ne pas nous laisser prendre dans le dévent du Luthi à notre vent.
Par la suite, l’ensemble des manœuvres ont été parfaites !
Une montée de spi a été quelque peu difficile. Ce qui est intéressant : Irmgard qui était au piano a fait un pas en avant pour venir en appui de Karen et Alice sur le pont avant (une bonne réaction, car six mains étaient bien nécessaires) ; Thomas a immédiatement arrêté de régler le spi pour régler le génois qui était encore levé (un bon geste, car le génois bien gonflé nous a permis de ne pas perdre trop de vitesse) ; Roselyn en charge du réglage de la grand-voile a quant à elle également fait un pas en avant pour remplacer Irmgard au piano (geste essentiel qui nous a permis de gagner beaucoup de temps et de remonter rapidement le spi). Bravo !
En terme de stratégie, l’appui d’Irmgard et Rosely m’a été important, avec des indications précises sur les autres bateaux et les bouées.
Ce que je retiens pour moi :
- être plus clair dans mes instructions pour que chacun-e sache à qui je m’adresse ;
- mieux et plus me reposer sur Irmgard et la personne qui règle la grand-voile pour m’informer sur la situation des autres bateaux ;
- avoir bien confiance en moi au moment du départ et insister pour être bien placé.
Un manque important toutefois : il faudra qu’une des personnes sur le pont avant apprenne à regarder la ligne de départ pour m’indiquer à quelle distance nous sommes au moment du départ. Nous allons entraîner cela.
Dernier élément enfin : six personnes sur le bateau est l’idéal
